Portico Sadie Massey Awards
Back to article list

6th July 2017

On Thursday the 29th June Miss Molloy, Miss Boyd and Year 9 student Aya attended a glittering ceremony at the Portico Library to attend the Sadie Massey Awards, the competition runs every year and is a prestigious event celebrating young writers and judged by a panel of experts. The judges included Paul Morris, author of ‘Time Traveller, Danny and The Codebreaker’ Fiona Hadfield, Senior Children’s Bookseller for Waterstones, Melvin Burgess, author of ‘Junk’ and local writer Martin Griffin whose books include ‘Poison Boy’ and ‘Lifers’. Tony Walsh AKA Longfella, hosted the event so a tough crowd to impress!

Earlier this year Aya borrowed ‘Under Attack’ from the library and submitted a book review to Miss Molloy, impressed with the level of skill, depth and passion in her writing Miss Molloy felt it warranted an entry into the competition and guess what….she was right, Aya walked away with a PSMA 2017. As well as meeting the judges Aya was presented with a goodie bag containing a £20.00 book voucher and a copy of ‘Time Travellers and the Crystal Dome, in which her review of ‘Under Attack’ is published.  A book should not be judged by its size but by the ideas and message’, rather profound from such a young girl.

Quote from Aya “It was a brilliant experience and I was really joyful and proud to represent Cedar Mount Academy, I was so excited to meet the judges and it was wonderful to see and hear Tony Walsh perform his poetry”.
